Is it safe to trade gold during the Asian session from South Africa?

The Asian session is tradable but quieter, so ranges can be narrow and a breakout can reverse quickly. Spreads and slippage depend on the broker and the time of day, and thin liquidity makes stops less reliable. If you trade then, size for wider slippage and avoid holding through the London open unprepared.

Why does the gold market close and reopen over the weekend?

Spot gold follows the global interbank week, so it closes on Friday evening and reopens on Sunday evening in South African time. Weekend news can create a gap between Friday's close and Sunday's open, and a stop placed inside that gap will not protect you. Size positions so a weekend gap cannot do serious damage.

Do daylight saving changes in London and New York shift the gold session times for me?

Yes. South Africa does not change its clocks, so when London or New York move to or from daylight saving, the session boundaries shift by an hour in local time. The London and New York overlap can move accordingly. Check the current session times on your platform rather than assuming last season's schedule.

Should I avoid trading gold in the minutes around major US data?

It depends on your strategy and your broker's execution. Around major US releases, liquidity thins before the number and returns unevenly after it, so spreads and slippage can widen sharply and stops can fill far from where you set them. If you hold through such moments, reduce size and accept that the fill may differ from the quote.
